Dueling Shacks in O Scale - Part 1

Hello everyone! I'm excited to share that this is my very first Sierra West kit. Fair warning, I’m a bit of a talker so if I’m rambling, please let me know. My journey back into model railroading started about six months ago, inspired by finding an old copy of the 2006 On30 Annual. Coming from “N” scale, I’m fascinated by the level of detail “O” scale building provide yet I don’t I have the real estate for an “O” scale layout. So On30 it is!

The next step was figuring out what tools and resources I’d need to reach my goal—and wow, that felt like a daunting task. I’ve built scale wooden sailing ships before, so I already had many of the basic tools. But when it came to everything else? I wasn’t so sure.

After a month of watching YouTube how-to videos, I felt overwhelmed by all the different techniques for building and weathering. Then I discovered Sierra West—and it felt like I’d hit the jackpot! A treasure trove of craftsman kits and a whole University section complete with a Material List. After spending some time reading through the O Scale Builds category, I decided the Dueling Shacks kit would be the perfect place to start.

Per Bett’s instructions, stated with the wooden shack. To be fair, I was so focused on the build, did not think much about recording my progress until I joined the Forum and received words of encouragement to post my progress.

My main goal with this build is to learn the art of weathering—there’s definitely a lot to take in! I’m aiming for a look that captures the feel of very old, seasoned wood, but still represents a structure that’s functional and holding together. And please, I'm here to learn so please provide feedback.

Started by using a card file to grain the wood. I found running the file at a 45 degrees provided a better variation.8 File Card Up

I used the Rembrant recommended chalk for the base:

  • Nice job. Your weathering looks great.
  • Good decision to start with the Dueling Shacks. The Gateway to the SW modeling univers.
And what's more, you'll never walk alone. This forum is there to help you whenever help is needed. I started with the Dueling Shacks as well, and finally, I ended up building nearly every O scale SW building kit.
So far your work really looks good !! Well done Scott
  • Well Scott...it all starts with the wood. Once you're happy with how the wood detailing and weathering turned out, you've established a base for everything else. In looking at your photos of your wood work, I'd say you nailed it! Sets the stage for the entire build. Well done.
  • Steve, thank you.
  • Ken & Robert - Thank you all so much for the encouragement—it's genuinely appreciated! To be fair, I have Brett to thank as well - the results are good because of his process and detailed step-by-step instructions. I'm continually inspired by the incredible quality of work shared in this forum. Starting with the Dueling Shacks has been a great experience so far, and I’m excited to keep learning and building. Thanks again for the warm welcome and kind words! And yes, clearly this kit is a gateway ;-). Hope to start on the castings this weekend.
