Hello to all- my name is Bob and I live in the foothills to the East of Sacramento, CA.
I began modeling in 2020 when I left work at the beginning of the pandemic. Things were just getting too weird; sitting through endless Zoom meetings would surely suck the life out of me. But I needed something to do besides yard work and reading. . . here I am nearly 5 years later, having built six boats/ships and a horse-drawn buggy (kits). I also have a stagecoach nearing completion.
I ordered the O Scale Sawmill and have received Parts 2 and 3, awaiting Part 1. I plan on visiting the mill the kit is based on in Sebastopol, CA one or more times during construction, which I expect to take a good long time, which is how I could justify the cost of the kit. After reading a bit here on the Forum, I decided to also order the Dueling Shacks. Although I may start some components of the Sawmill while waiting for the Shacks, when the Shacks arrive I will break off and build those from start to finish, to practice the techniques applicable to both models.
These kits will be quite different in approach from what I've done to date. One of the things I enjoyed most is fashioning the smallest items of deck furnishings, for example, and scratch-building my own additions. Of course, I'm sure I'll find opportunities to do the same with the SW kits, despite the many furnished castings and printed items. I am looking forward to learning the methods used here for applying color, etc., as my models to date have all been represented as new. Eventually I'd like to be able to scratch-build scenes I find and photograph in my area.
I look forward to advice and ideas that I will certainly need!
Here are a few of the little bits I made for an unfinished model ship, as practice for inserting pictures into posts here:

SW kits.
Have fun and share your progress as you go, we'd love to see it.

i gotta agree with robert. you should wait until the dueling shacks show up and start with them, as they are a great introduction into the art of sierra west building. i think you'll be glad you did.
I will start reading the manual if nothing else. I already have questions, but will hold off until I'm in the thick of it.
The biggest question is unanswerable. . . where will I put the finished model (small house, haha)?

Reading through the manual first is definitely a good first step, it will familiarize you with the steps and the process. Read and re read, many hours went into writing it.
Follow the manual and you will have no problems, it's an amazing kit, for everyone at any level. First time builder or experienced modeller.
