This is where the Sawmill was built. I bought this kit in 2011 and it is now almost completed. I took artistic license on several areas of the kit. I included a sawdust burner, scratchbuilt of brass, and changed/ added several areas in the mill itself. it is lighted inside and out and the entire roof will come off in one piece. And as a bonus I have included a sound track loop of the real sawmill at Sebastopol that this mill is based on. This kit was a big undertaking and well worth the effort.
A water tower has been erected to supply, what else, water to the mill itself.
The ground water in this area is at or near the surface. It surfaces several time in this valley. A sandbagged ditch flows near the mills boiler.
Asphalt is the surface from the loading area from the mill.
A crane is used here to unload the logs from the log cars to the mill ramp. The Sawdust bin has been removed and a blow pipe to the sawdust burner will be installed here instead.
The rear of the mill has needed repairs being done. New decking and supports for the overhanging roof.
The interior is lit with 16 volt mini lights with the wiring following along the top of the rafters off of brass rod busses installed.
The Office building and storage wharehouse which is the Railroad Camp kit.
Here is the Water Tower and Hand car kit. It fits in nicely at this area of my layout.
I build these fantastic kits to suit my railroad layout. As I have said before they need to be sturdy enough to hold up to the Vaccuum cleaner and the use the layout gets from Operators running the trains around. Not as detailed as they should be but enough to look good. Thanks for looking, Wayne
Really nice work! Love your scenery and how you have integrated the structures into the layout. the sawmill turned out Fantastic! The sawdust burner adds a lot to the whole area.
Thanks all for the positive comments, I appreciate them. I am a member of the NMRA Pacific Southwest Division, San Diego, and our division has monthly layout tours and my layout ktours seems to draw a goodly number of visitors, many repeat customers. I always make it a point to advertise the Sierra West buildings as they look the best. Thanks
Thanks so much for posting these awesome shots. I absolutely love seeing my kits on a quality layout. What a wonderful job you have done of creating such compelling scenes.
Fantastic job on the sawmill and the additions, along with the sound track. Also great work on the other SW kits you have completed, they are all so well done and we'd like to see more of each one..
Also a very nice little 'nod' to Mr. Kinsey who has served us all well with his proliferation of pictures to learn from.
Wonderful pictures of your great modelling. Thanks for sharing.
For those among us whom do not know Darius Kinsey, of course I have not met him.
"Darius Kinsey (1869–1945) was a photographer active in western Washington state from 1890 to 1940. He is best known for his large-format images of loggers and phases of the region's lumber industry. He also photographed locomotives and landscapes and (especially early in his career) did studio work." I have several of his photo album books for reference.
I was also a large format photographer some years ago whom worked with glass plate negatives and Ferrotypes. Which by the way my Model Railroad has taken residence in my former Photo Studio. The Digital camera forced me out of business. Oh well.
The sound loop I use is from the video I made of the Sturgeons Mill. I edited the sound track to be on a sound device from Pricom systems.
This the video of the Mill, I did post on the forum some years ago. Here it is the post if anyone is interested.
If you look back in the discussions...I also posted a bunch of photos from a visit I made during the Sacramento Nation Narrow Guage convention a few years back...I got a personal tour of the mill by Bob Sturgeon....
Wow Wayne, this is really amazing. I have the sawmill but haven't started it yet. I need to get a table big enough to build it on, but yours is an outstanding example of what this kit is all about. And I love your layout. Hopefully you'll share more of it with us. Thanks for sharing and instructing us in some of the techniques you used to build it. Very creative and different. I love it.
