Just got the 3rd installment of the O scale foundry....will post a few pictures at some point. Unboxed stuff and the 3D printed details are really nice. Going to start with priming and paint them up, then move to the construction of the structures and adding the roof overhangs and things. Really like the interior of the tempering shed. I plan to start attaching structure to the foam base I have cut for it so I can get it to a point I can semi plant it on the layout as that area has been dormant for too long. Brett advises not to permanently attach some of the details...and I will follow that advice....but some things I need to "temp" attach to size out the area. I will use a silicone gel for that. I have a method to build a diorama that I can then incorporate into the layout that I'm sure a lot of you are familiar with. Basically a big puzzle piece that will "plug" into the other foam. I'm using that on a few Sierra West kits that are temporarily living on my mini modular layout....

    some of the details from the kit....the forklift is not pictured as it's drying in the paint booth....pay no attention to the On18 center cab or structure...they just happen to be on the workbench....

    Priming up a good chunk of the details.....waiting on the one AK color I didn't have....I thought I had most of them... so I can do the concrete docks...the foam is cut ... I went to 24" by 24" to fit some tracks I have planned for the area....and the build of the right half continues....

    I have this bad habit of having at least 3 kits (or more) (like now) in progress at any given time....and I'm real slow at finishing stuff.....well...as Karl pointed out the other day, I need to get my butt in gear to get a contest destined diorama done by September for the NNG....but I am also working on the Foundry as I wait for parts or paint to dry.....so I washed off the cast resin parts and will prime them today....and I want to work on the concrete slab loading dock tonight....I have the AK recommended paints, and a few other secret ingredients...so see ya later....SW Foundry cast resin parts

    Ok...here's the dock, and the tank...primed. And here is where I deviate again....I prime with Rustoleum Dark Grey auto primer, just a light covering coat. In my opinion, the flat black paints are just....too flat black....too stack a tone. The dark gray looks like a weathered black.... which is why I also repaint all of my steam locos with it. I pretty much use it on everything. As Brett says, its a great way to get shadows and some depth. So I'll let it cure for a bit, then tonight I'll be starting to paint it with the AK paints....SW Foundry primed loading dock

    Ok....a little paint on the dock....started with Warm Grey....stippled on with a small stencil brush....covered about 80% of the dock, let it flash a bit, then hit it with the Med Grey, also stippled,,,,filling in the open spots...then randomly stippled on some grimy grey. I went over the entire surface again with the stipple application, no new paint on the brush...I'll let it flash off...then lightly wet the brush, no paint...and blend the tones a bit. Ill let it dry completely, then add some more of each color, randomly...making it a little darker where it will be near the center,,, lighter near the edges and lightest where it will be near the building. Eventually I'll add some chalk later. That I will fix with some workable chalk fixative..................LaterSW Foundry wet dock

    A bit more paint....still not exactly where I want it...but I'll wait till its planted and has some details on it....the last shot is the end I'm putting towards the back of the building...this will be on a peninsula on the layout...so it won't be hidden....a little rusty rebar....needs a bit more texture...working on it...its a broken end of a #80 drill..... sw foundry dock final paint

    Kidding, great start !!! I got my third part, but I'll wait to start building until all is here. Gotta have some more patience. Every now and then, I unbox the goods to admire the sheer quality of them. Astounding I might say. And then I put them back in the box... :)

    Robert...I feel you....it will be a while before it's all here....and we'll have to wait to finish it. I'm just going to build what I have and work with and around the missing parts. I tend to have multiple builds going on....it's a sickness...lol....and it does look a bit too dark....I was working on it at like 3am.....under not the best lighting...but since it's chalk....it can be fixed....I am looking for a well used look....

    Those close up photo's really show the incredible detail that is in the castings.
    The texture, detail and depth that is cast in place is really amazing on those parts.
