ken....i have a couple of cutting mats too. a small one and a huge one. i use them when i need to cut openings in clapboard, among other things, for that very reason. glass is tough on blades.
it was actually a c-clamp holding the sander in place. at any rate, i'm okay with the way it turned out. i have more desktop space for c-clamping the sander in place. problem solved. windows for the rear wall came today. primed with a machine gray and a camo brown overspray. i'll work on those later. i managed to get stairway on the rear wall done. (now if i can keep it one piece until it's time to glue it on. i know the one post is out of plumb. i'll fix that when i install it. i'm still waiting for the bluewood stain. i'll probably get it tomorrow.
if the stain comes tomorrow, all the boards are ready for it. meanwhile, i gotta lay out and cut the window openings on the rear wall. feldco guy is gonna be here at 6:30, so no more modeling today. fiddle-dee dee. tomorrow's another day....
they won't go until the end of april so it shouldn't be too bad. your stairs down to the water are excellent. you guys should see the lighthouse diorama carl is building. it's awesome.
that didn't happen. i went downstairs to start laying out windows and happened to notice the staircase was leaning to one side, so i decided to tear into it to find out why. i ended up spending 90 minutes on it getting it just right. so now, i think it is.
i managed to lay out all the windows and start cutting them out yesterday, then i sprained my thumb and had to stop. i'll get back to it once my thumb stops hurting so much.
bryan: i wish. carl: i called. it was busy.... carlb: i couldn't if i tried. jerry: if i threw a fastball, my arm would fall off ed: that's what snowblowers are for. i did it opening a dogdamn jar of spaghetti sauce.....
i spent the day at a convention for my job, and all i could think about all day was getting the bluewood stain today and getting the wood stained. it didn't come today. cccrow said that they shipped it on the 10th. oh the disappointment.....
just finished cutting out all the openings on the rear wall. because it's going to look severely neglected, i'm going to stain the clapboard with a dark a/i wash (or two) because i plan on a few of the boards to be in bad shape and i want what's behind them to not be naked wood. still haven't gotten the bluewood stain, so i'll spend the rest of the day working on three of the window openings. the other ones are perfect fits. i sent my signage needs to my son today, so hopefully i'll have them soon. i decided to name the structure "NORTON'S FISH CAMP". my wife's maiden name is norton, so it seemed appropriate.....
so here's a typical kevin story.... i laid out all the windows the other day in pencil. after building the staircase, i decided i better check and see if there were any windows that would be blocked by the stairs. indeed, there was one, so i flipped the wall over and wrote do not cut right next to the window that would have been blocked by the stairs. today i decided my thumb was okay enough (it actually wasn't/isn't, as the pain is now also halfway up my arm) and i would go down stairs and get them cut out because i was sure the bluewood stain would arrive today. well, i went to it and made short shrift of them, only to sit back and admire my work and notice that i did indeed cut out the window i told myself not to. i jjust don't freakin' listen!! not a big deal though, because i retrieved the exact blank from the garbage can and glued it back in the space. besides, i can side right over it ONCE THE DAMN STAIN GETS HERE %$^*&^( and after i checked the fit of the windows and doors, i gave it a good dose of a/i and stuck it under the iron for a while. i'll probably end up doing another one. im dead in the water until the bluewood stain gets here. .
oh yeah, i also had to re-glue the top part of the wall to the bottom because after all that manipulation and cutting pressure, they separated. that's me...one step forward, two steps back. par for the course. i know you can't see from the top picture. but these windows are going to be in much worse shape than the front ones. i primed them with gray, and then did an overspray of camo brown. once that was dry (actually a few days later), i cut off a chunk of grouting sponge, squirted some green paint on the glass, and dabbed the sponge into it. then i very lightly dabbed very sparse green paint on the windows and doors. up close they look like they've been there for quite a while (but probably not quite 157 years old....)
Hey Kevin, sign of a good modeler is not how well you build things its how well you fix mistakes!...we all do that stuff...well done on the fix despite lack of photo evidence!hehe. Ken
thanks ken. its there, it's under the stairs. right where i knew it would be.... i gave it a second wash to darken the claboard and it started to warp right away, so i put the piece of birch that was going to be the base (plans have changed. i've got boats.....) on top of it and put the iron on that. i don't think i should touch it for a couple days.....
