just so's you fellas didn't think i up'n died...i got the walls cut for the idaho hotel today. this thing is huge. a pubic hair under 18" long. i had to order a back issue of the narrow gauge and shortline gazette in order to get a copy of the plans that i could read. it's supposed to be here on the 19th. the 20th starts a 16 day vacation, so i expect i'll have all the rough openings cut out for the 20 windows and 7 doors...soon. then i get to play with wood for a while.
i talked with brett today about alot of stuff and i ordered a kit, and brett brought up my current project and suggested that i post a perspective shot, so here's a pic of the hotel with a bic lighter and a 1' ruler to give an idea of the size of this monster.
brett graciously offered for me to post project updates. rather than start a new thread, i'll just do it here. i'm at the stage where, until i receive the back issue of the gazette, i can't really go any farther on the walls, so in the meantime i grained, detailed and stained all the 1x8 8" long boards i had in stock that i'm using for clapboards....until i ran out. i ordered 5 packages yesterday and i should have them by the end of the week. this monster is gonna eat up alot of 1x8s.... i also have a precision mitre saw and mitre box from micro mark on the way, along with another bottle of silverwood. hmmm....i wonder which one will get here first.
siding boards. no where near enough. i suspect this monster is gonna eat 1x8s like crazy. northeast scale lumber emailed me this morning that my order has shipped!
these boards will be damp brushed with a white wash acrylic paint.
it is big. the overall length is 18 5/8ths inches. it's really gonna gobble up the 1x8s. especially if i decide to side the rear wall, and i probably will. i doubt i'll be cutting in windows though.
here's the first batch of damp brushed siding boards, along with three fishermen and a set of windows to show the color scheme. i think i'm gonna like this
and here's the right end wall about a third of the way finished. (windows just put in to show color scheme).
the board that looks like its slipped on the right side of the right window has been replaced and it's all straight now.
there will a pedestrian door on the front and back walls of this part of the building,
i went to hobby lobby for some supplies today, and there was a 50% off sale on a lot of stuff (which is the only thing that makes standing in one of two lines with 12-15 other people waiting for the slowest cashier in the county check out these customers with dozens of items one slow item at a time, all the while you're wondering why there are 10 other completely unmanned check out stations to your immediate left) but i digress. i needed a few things like paint brushes and razor blades, crraft paints etc., then i saw these.
there are nail holes on the ends of every board. i added nail holes every 4 feet (1 inch). i realize walls aren't built 4 foot on center, but i thought that would be an acceptable compromise. i think my nail holes are very subtle and i try not to overdo them. i got the openings on one of the gable walls done yesterday. plans for today though, so no bench time. merry christmas and happy new year everyone.

i just ordered the ultimate sander. can't wait to get that thing and boot my true sander.
aside from some signage, this wall's done.
The clap board on the left side of the north end facing South only has one nail hole why?
stuck it with bubble gum.

If the nail holes become to large you and always fill them with Bubble Gum.
